Before you call us…

Before you contact us, and so we can provide the best possible advice, you must:
  • Obtain a copy of the SEN Code of Practice. Telephone 0845 60 222 60 and ask for a free copy. Quote reference DCSF 581/2001.
Click HERE to download a PDF version
    (*very large file* 3.24 MB).
You are not expected to read it cover to cover, but it will provide answers to many of your queries and reduce the number of questions you will have to ask us. It covers all stages of SEN provision, the criteria for provision, and the official timeframes that you and your local authority must follow. If you telephone us, we may refer to the relevant paragraph or page number.
There is other useful information, including a Guide for Parents which can be found HERE.
  • Make sure all your papers are in order, so you can refer to them easily when you call us. These are likely to include:
    • School reports
    • Statements of Special Educational Needs
    • Appendices to those statements
    • Letters from your local authority
    • Reports from therapists and psychologists
    • Previous SENDIS Tribunal decisions
Do not send any materials directly to the SOS!SEN office unless asked to do so by a helpline staff member.
