Parent Workshops

SOS!SEN runs regular hands on training sessions to help parents on topics such as how to appeal an EHC Plan or how to prepare for a Tribunal hearing.  We also run Topic Workshops  ( see "Topic Workshops" tab)

Medical needs in and out of school: children’s rights to a suitable education

This workshop is for parents wanting to know how children with medical needs should be provided for in schools.It will cover home tuition and educational provision at home and how to enforce rights to education and SEN provision.

The workshop will cover:

1. Children with medical needs and how they should be provided for in schools.

  • Government guidance
  • Governing body duties
  • Schools support
    • Policies
    • Healthcare plans
    • School trips etc
  • Dunder Equality legislation
  • Roles of school, professionals and other personnel
  • Staff training and support
  • Child’s role
  • Medicine on school premises
  • Emergencies
  • Unacceptable practice
  • Liability and indemnity

2. Children out of school for medical and other reasons

  • Education out of school – home tuition, hospital schools etc
  • How much tuition?
  • What form can it take?
  • Who will provide it?
  • What about therapies in statement/ECHPs?
  • Glance at exclusions and home education

How to enforce rights to adjustments, education and SEN provision

  • Who to complain to
  • Legal remedies including legal aid
  • Evidence needed
  • Next steps and ongoing support

Saturday 4 June

Working together with the school to improve speech and language therapy in the classroom

led by Ann Bauer
- Head of Speech &Language Unit in a mainstream school

Time: 10am to 12.30pm

We are delighted that Ann Bauer will be leading this workshop. Ann is the head of a speech and language unit in a mainstream school. She is a qualified dyslexia and speech and language teacher. M.Ed, BA(Hons), LRAM, LGSM, PGCE, OCRDipSpLD.

The workshop will cover:

  • Coping in the classroom setting/ will a mainstream classroom be right
  • What can a specialist teacher add to the mix
  • Curriculum knowledge/pre-teaching of language needed/conceptual teaching
  • Links with teaching staff
  • Exam access and access to resources: laptops etc
  • Possible assessment for dyslexia
  • Classroom teaching as an example of best methods for other staff
  • Monitoring of class teachers
  • Question and answer session
