Parent Workshops

SOS!SEN runs regular hands on training sessions to help parents on topics such as how to appeal an EHC Plan or how to prepare for a Tribunal hearing.  We also run Topic Workshops  ( see "Topic Workshops" tab) 


Saturday 18th June

TWO WORKSHOPS - Come to one or both

Morning:

Enforcing SEN provision and parents' guide to complaints

led by Eleanor Wright
- SEN Solicitor and SOS!SEN Co-ordinator

Time: 9.30am to 1pm

This workshop is for parent/carers who would like more information on how to enforce SEN provision to ensure that provision in the statement/EHC plan is followed and how to take effective action if this is not happening.

The workshop will cover:

  • The legal framework:
    • Rights for children without EHC Plans
    • EHC Plans – need for specificity, which parts are/are not enforceable
  • Complaints
    • Local authority/Department for Education
    • Local Government Ombudsman
    • MPs/local councillors/publicity
  • Enforcement through the courts
    • Judicial review
    • Legal aid

Parents guide to appealing to the SEN Tribunal -
What you need to know and prepare

Time: 1.30pm to 4.30pm

This workshop is for any carer/young person who would like to know the correct legal procedures to prepare for an SEN tribunal. It covers which sections you can appeal and how.

The workshop will cover:

  • EHC Plan
    • Examining the Education, Health, Care Plan and the sections.
    • What should the EHC Plan contain? In what sections?
  • Transitions from Statement to EHCP
    • What happens at transition from a statement to an EHC Plan?
  • Appealing the Contents of the EHCP
    • Appeals and mediation
    • Timescales
    • Drafting appeal grounds
    • Preparing evidence
    • The appeal process
    • The hearing
